Perms are showing up in inspiration photos again.

Aug 13, 2026

Soft waves, spiral texture, added body. We understand the appeal!

But before changing the structure of your hair, there’s one question we think matters more than the trend: Is a perm actually the best choice for your hair?

What a Perm Actually Does

A perm changes the internal structure of the hair.

During the service, some of the strong disulfide bonds inside the strand are chemically altered while the hair is wrapped around rods. A neutralizer then helps reform those bonds in their new shape. That’s what makes the curl last.

It’s also why we look closely at your hair history before recommending one.

Color-Treated or Fine Hair? This Matters

Highlights, lightener, permanent color, smoothing services, and previous chemical work all stay in the hair. Perming adds another layer of processing, which can be more than some hair should take on. We’re especially careful with fine, lightened, porous, fragile, or heavily color-treated hair. Even when a perm is technically possible, preserving strength and flexibility may be the better long-term choice.

If a chemical texture service is appropriate, we may use a Redken Extreme CAT Protein Treatment to support strength and elasticity. But protein is support, not a shortcut around compromised hair.

Traditional Perm vs. Digital Perm

A traditional perm is often called a cold perm because it uses chemical processing and rods without heated digital equipment. A digital perm is considered a hot perm and uses temperature-controlled heated rods to create a softer, looser wave pattern.

Seen on TikTok? Digital perms are getting plenty of attention right now. They’re often associated with soft, loose waves and the polished finish seen in Japanese and Korean hair trends.

Digital perms are not recommended for hair with existing color, or for hair with density, strength, or integrity concerns. If that specific technique is what you want, we recommend HAYATO New York, where digital perming is a specialty.

It’s also worth knowing that a digital perm isn’t necessarily a wash-and-go service. The finished look typically requires the right blowdry tools and technique at home to show off the curl pattern the way you see it online.

Sometimes Less Processing Is the Better Plan

Wanting more movement, body, or curl does not always mean you need a perm!

Both traditional and digital perms create an artificial curl pattern, which means the finished look still needs proper at-home styling. You may need more styling work than expected to encourage the curl, shape it correctly, and recreate the finish you loved in your inspiration photo.

A perm can reduce some daily styling, but it doesn’t remove styling from the equation altogether.

Sometimes the answer is a better haircut, a different styling technique, products that support your natural texture, or a blowout that gives you the shape you were hoping for. Those options keep more flexibility in the hair. A perm can absolutely be the right choice for the right person. We just think it should be chosen because it makes sense for your hair, your styling routine, and how much maintenance you actually want to do at home, not because the technique is trending.

Pricing varies based on hair length and the rod size needed to create your desired curl pattern.

Because permanent texture requires a closer look at your hair history, strength, density, and desired result, please call or text Elayne James Salon before scheduling. We’ll help determine whether a perm makes sense for your hair and what to expect from the service and at-home styling.

Hair trends come and go.

Your hair has to live with the decision a little longer.
